WPML¶
The WPML extension for the Dealer Management System (DMS) plugin enables full multilingual support, allowing you to translate all custom post types, categories, and values into multiple languages. By integrating with the WPML (WordPress Multilingual Plugin), this extension ensures that your vehicle listings and related content are accessible to a global audience. With WPML's powerful translation management tools, you can easily localize your inventory, making it easier for international customers to browse and understand your listings.
This documentation will guide you through the setup, configuration, and best practices for using the WPML Integration extension to expand your dealership's reach.
Requirements¶
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| DMS version | 1.0.0 or newer |
| License | Starter or higher |
| WPML | The WPML plugin, active, with String Translation installed |
WPML's String Translation module is not optional here. DMS names — types, categories, terms, badges, and global option labels — are registered as WPML strings, not as posts, so String Translation is where all of them are translated.
How it works¶
DMS data is registered with WPML as strings, grouped into domains:
| DMS data | WPML domain |
|---|---|
| Listing types, their categories, terms, and badges | dms-type-{type id} — one domain per listing type |
| Global DMS options | dms-global-options |
Registration happens in two ways:
- Automatically, as you work. Adding a type, category, term, or badge registers it with WPML immediately. Renaming one re-registers the new text and removes the old string. Deleting one removes its strings.
- On demand, with a scan. Data that already existed before the extension was activated has never been through that flow, so it is registered by running a scan. See Scanning Terms.
Once registered, translate the strings in WPML, and DMS serves the translated values on the front end automatically.
Edit DMS values in your default language only
DMS settings and category pages can only be edited from the site's default language. Opening them in another language redirects you back to the default and shows a notice explaining why. Translations belong in WPML, not in the DMS fields. See Translating.
Next steps¶
- Scanning Terms — register existing DMS data with WPML.
- Translating — language columns, and where each string lives in WPML.
- Developer Reference — filters and hooks.
- Troubleshooting — missing terms, stale translations, disabled fields.
